Happy New Year Boggy Creek families! It seems as if our school year is flying by and Spring Break and testing will be here before we know it. We have had a very busy first semester with a lot of opportunities to proudly represent all of the great things going on at Boggy Creek!

Our dual language program expanded this year into second grade and our students are showing remarkable growth in both their language skills and their academics. Second grade had our largest increase in students, especially those coming from Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, and our dual language program allowed those students to transition very quickly to their new school.

Overall, we have had over 60 new students enroll at Boggy Creek due to Hurricane Maria and have hired two new staff members who relocated. We have formed a support group for those students to help with adjusting to all of the changes they have experienced. This group meets once a month with our counselor, our social worker, and our new staff members from Puerto Rico. The children get an opportunity to talk about their experiences with others who have gone through it.

AVID has once again been a highlight of our school year. In October, we were chosen to hold a showcase open to school districts from the Central Florida area. In November, were asked to hold a showcase for attendees at the AVID National Conference. Participants came from across the country, including a large cohort from Hawaii and from the Florida Keys. As a culminating event at the National Conference, two of our fifth grade students were chosen from the Central Florida area to serve on student panel to describe the AVID experience. Alyssa and Anthony Figueroa were chosen to be the only elementary representatives on the panel and very eloquently spoke to an audience of several thousand on how AVID has helped them academically. They were, without a doubt, the hit of the conference!

We are fortunate to have many outstanding business partners who have contributed so much to the success of our students. This year we were able to distribute forty-nine turkeys at Thanksgiving to our neediest families that were donated by Business Partners. Additionally, we have received clothing and school supplies for our children and Heritage Dictionaries for our students who have arrived and do not yet speak English. We are incredibly grateful for all their support and encourage you to support these businesses as they do so much for your children and our school. We would like to particularly thank the following Business Partners:

Checkers, Mystic Transportation, Brown’s TKD, Boggy Creek Air Boat Express Transportation LaMay Properties, Gladys Diaz, ABC Transportation, WKMG Channel 6, Barnes and Noble, Latino Leadership CFE Federal Credit, Dave and Buster’s,  Lowe’s Union (Lake Nona).

Our Arts program put together another fabulous performance this December with their production of A Christmas Carol. Once again, Ms. Johnson, Mr. Mendoza, and Mrs. Rivera put in many personal hours to provide an opportunity for our students to participate in the arts. We are grateful for their dedication to our school!

As we enter the second semester, please remember we need you! Parents are the most important part of a child’s success—both academically and socially. We would love to have you as a member of our PTO, our School Advisory Committee or as a volunteer. We have many ways you can participate in our school beyond the regular school day. Please contact Miriam Medina, our Volunteer Coordinator, for more information.

We have many events coming up this semester beginning with our Literacy/AVID night in February and ending with a Multicultural Festival in May. Our dedicated families and staff members are what make Boggy Creek Elementary such an amazing place for students to learn and grow. We look forward to your continued participation at all of our family events!

Warm regards,
Rhonda McMahon
